COSSAC love to collaborate with young talented individuals and are excited to explore what we can produce together.
When traveling in Seoul we met artist Donghan Shin, who became inspired by COSSAC’s fashion collections. We began to work with Donghan to produce some stunning art pieces using COSSAC as his canvas, one of his designs is featured in our FOR THE SOUL SS15 collection on our “Bitch Please” cropped tee and "Come as you are" tote bag.
In particular Donghan’s street art style was what caught our eye and the way in which he can seamlessly bring a simple image to life with his energetic and intricate work. We spoke to Doughan Shin, about his work and his inspirations.
In three words describe you artwork style
Freedom, Love, Music
Where did you learn to do your techniques?
I used to major in drawing cartoons in high school, but once I realized that it wasn't quite what I wanted to do I started to search for other things that I like. One day I came across an artist who drew fabulous paintings and that's when I thought I should change my major to Fine Art. Majoring in Fine Art at University, I learned a lot of things from the professors in school and interesting classes. I also spent a lot of time on my own, thinking and practicing, making effort to improve my work.
Describe some things that inspire you
Music is one thing that always inspires me. I listen to music while I'm working most of the time. I think my work is affected by the rhythm of the music, the singer’s voice and the beat of the music.
Which artists/designers inspire you and why?
I'm very much interested in fashion industry these days, (this is one of the reasons why I have collaborated with COSSAC) and lately I have been studying about street fashion and culture to develop my creativity.
An American Hip Hop collective 'Odd Future', led by Tyler, The Creator inspires me. What I like most about the brand is that it not only includes fashion but also music, photographs and art pieces of their own. Another reason is that one of my favourite artists, singer-songwriter/rapper Frank Ocean, is included in it.
Where do you do your artwork?
When I was a student I mostly worked in my workroom at school. However, at present I work at home.
How long does it take you to create a piece?
It depends. I do my artwork whenever I feel like doing it and I immediately stop when I feel that it's not the day to work. It could take as short as a few days or even as long as several months.
What is your favourite medium to work?
I'm into street art, so my favourite would be spray paints and marker pens. Also, when I'm working on a flat surface, I like to work with drawings or photographs and I also love to scribble with pens.
Are you working on any projects at the moment?
I'm hoping to establish a brand of my own. At present, I'm working on a collection, creating pieces on the concept of 'Carpe Diem'. Currently, I'm working on designing T-shirts. I hope a lot of people find my work interesting and buy the merchandise.
What do you hope to achieve with your artwork?
I'm hoping to become more famous and achieve my goal as designing album covers for famous musicians around the world. One of my dreams is to design an album cover of one of my favourite musicians, 'Frank Ocean'.
What was it about COSSAC that inspired you?
COSSAC gives me the feeling of simplicity. I like the simplicity of the brand and I think it's classy and sophisticated. I thought that it would be great if it could be collaborated with my unique work.
