You shop ethically, buy from eco fashion brands and purchase your clothes sustainably but have you thought about the lifecycle of your eco fashion wardrobe?
The process of washing your clothes is a huge contributor to the impact your eco fashion wardrobe will have on the environment. It uses water resources, can cause chemical leaks into the natural environment, wastes energy and uses petroleum resources. Not to mention that the better care you take of your eco fashion wardrobe the longer it will last.
We’ve put together COSSAC’s top eco friendly fashion washing tips to keep your wardrobe in top shape:
Reduce the frequency
Cleanliness is essential. No one expects you to allow your clothes to get so dirty that they crawl in to the washing bowl themselves. But the frequency that you decide to do a wash is worth some thought. How many washes do you do a week? One? Two? More than Two?
A single washing machine load can use as much as 40 gallons of water. It’s good practice to reduce your wash frequency to once a week if you can. This will reduce the amount of water that is wasted and chemicals that are used in the washing detergents.
Keep the temperature cool
About 90% of the energy used in a washing machine load is used to heat up the water. By turning the dial to cool you are cutting that energy and reducing the waste. There are some great performing natural, cold temperature washing detergents available but we will get to them next.
Choose natural detergents
There are lots of chemicals included in popular brand washing detergents such as chlorine bleach, synthetic fragrances and optical brighteners that are damaging to the natural environment in their production and also when they enter in to our water and sewage systems in large volumes.
Online superstores such as Ethical Superstore have a variety of natural and cool water activated detergents that use plant and not petroleum based ingredients.
DIY where possible
You could even try your hand at making your own detergents with a traditional home recipe using vinegar, lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Check out Earth Easy for some recipe guides.
Your handy work can even go as far as hand washing. If you have the time, hand washing your eco fashion garments uses far less water and is less damaging to the fabric so your garments will last longer with this extra tender loving care.
Hang them out to dry
Finally there’s the drying. Hanging your clothes out to dry not only cuts out all the energy used from a tumble drying machine but it also reduces the strain that you put on your eco fashion fabrics, so they will last much longer.
So there it is. A quick guide to making small changes to your washing routine that help to make a big difference to your clothes’ lifespan and the prolonged impact your eco fashion will have on the environment.
